"The solace of such work as I do with brain and heart lies in this - that only there, in the silences of the painter or writer can reality be reordered, reworked and made to show its significant side."

-Lawrence Durrell

My work begins by sifting through memories and experiences in order to expose and explore raw emotions. Mining personal memories and dreams, along with historic myths, poetry and literature, I identify and revisit pivotal experiences, attempting to piece together their significance.

The fluidity of the encaustic medium is an ideal vehicle for my process because it allows me to experiment, modify and transform along the way. Comprised of molten beeswax, damar resin and pigments, its waxy surface is built up with layers, painted or drawn upon, carved into and scraped away. As ideas and images emerge, they may be brought to light or hidden beneath the layers of wax. Like an archeological dig or the subconscious itself, the surface of the paintings hold multiple layers of previous thoughts, images and marks, creating a visual map of the process.

Whether investigating the weight and complexity of our darkest emotions and memories or the lightness of transitory experiences, I ultimately strive to create rich, tactile work that is personal in its iconography yet universal in its attempt to better understand the world. Blending wax and pigments, I melt, fuse, layer, scrape, and create visceral work that invites the viewer in and guides them through the process of discovery.
